Tax-free

Tax-Free shopping in Spain

Not many people know if you live outside the European Union and come to Spain for a visit you can enjoy Tax-Free shopping. This amounts to a saving of 21% off the price of any items purchased while on holiday in Spain.

VAT refunds on your paragliding purchases

If you have permanent residence in a non-EU country or you are a citizen of non-EU countries, you can ask for the VAT refund for some purchases. The standard VAT rate in Spain is 21%

So, this means if you buy your paraglider, harness, reserve parachute, flight instruments or any other item in our shop during your time with us you can save approx. 21% of the price.

e.g. If you are a resident in a non-EU country and you buy your new paraglider in our shop, let's say that the price is 2.700 euros, you can save approx. 567 euros!!

Tax-Free goods

But the service is only applicable to items that you intend to take back with you to your country. The tax saving, however, is not applicable to restaurants or hotel bills or food items, or services in general,  as these items are not seen as exportable but rather a consumable.

Refunds are paid on all goods that are exported in the traveller’s personal luggage. Exported goods must be sealed and unused.

How to claim the TAX back

When you arrive at the airport you must present your tax refund cheques at customs BEFORE you check your bags in. Customs may request to check the items before they stamp your cheques. Once your cheques have been stamped by customs, you can cash your cheques at any Bureau de Change in your chosen currency.

In Spain, the entire VAT refund process for travellers is digital, through using the DIVA system: https://www.aena.es/en/malaga-costa-del-sol/airport-services/categories/vat-refund.html

At Malaga airport, you need to take the forms to the "DIVA" self-service desks. These are signposted "DIVA" behind the Jet2.com check-in desks (far right as you enter the airport). You just need to scan the form headed "DIVA". If the form is OK, the machine will return "Your DIVA tax-free form has been stamped" and a green tick symbol will appear. If not, it will return "Your DIVA tax-free form cannot be validated" and you will need to present their goods and paperwork to the Civil Guard's office (glass-windowed office at the other end of the Jet2.com's check-in desks). In the meantime, you will have received an e-mail from INNOVA (the company you registered them with), including an e-mail with login details for their app. It's worth downloading the app to keep track of progress, but you will also receive e-mails of any updates.

If you are not leaving Spain by plane the reclaim procedure is a little different.

If you are leaving Spain by any other means of transport, e.g. train or car, you have to visit the customs at the airport terminal (or wherever the customs point is for your departure from Spain) and present them with you VAT cheques, and they will stamp them for you. You must do this before you leave Europe. When you return to your country send the cheques back to the VAT claim office in Madrid.
